This is a vintage lithograph titled, "Dove" by world renown artist Peter Max. This piece heralds from the early stages of his meteoric career and features a self-portrait of the young artist who helped define the 60's style of psychedelia.
This piece bears the artist's printed name and in the lower right margins. "Dove" was published in 1968 by the Peter Max Publishing Corp and measures 36"h x 24"w. The framed dimensions are 40"h x 34"w. This piece includes a certificate of authenticity. There is a .125" x .125" spot where the ink has flakes off the image.
Peter Max was born in Berlin and spent his childhood in Shanghai. From China, the family went to Tibet for a year, and then on to Israel. His family's odyssey continued to Paris. Finally, at the age of 16, Max arrived in the United States. He began his art studies in New York at the Art Students League and continued at the Pratt Institute and School of Visual Arts. He has been awarded over 75 times for his work in commercial graphics album and magazine covers his most famous being the Yellow Submarine series he created for the Beatles. In 1989, for the 20th anniversary of Woodstock, Max was asked to create worlds largest rock and roll stage for the Moscow Music Peace Festival. Soon after the festival, in October, 1989, Max unveiled his 40 Gorbys, a colorful homage to Mikhail Gorbachev. As if it had prophetic overtones, a few weeks later, Communism fell in Eastern Europe and Max was selected to receive a 7000 pound section of the Berlin Wall, which was installed on the battleship Intrepid museum. Using a hammer and chisel, Max carved a dove from within the stone and placed it on top of the wall. As a painter for four previous U.S. Presidents, Carter, Ford, Bush and Reagan, in 1993, Max was approached by the inaugural committee to create posters for Bill Clinton's inauguration. He was later invited to the White House to paint the signing of the Peace Accord. Peter Max is known throughout the world and is a household name in America and has had over 50 solo exhibitions and been part of countless group show across the world.
